The name Outer Banks has become commonplace on the tongues of so many teens across the country. The drama/mystery ten-episode series came to Netflix at the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, and it blew up immediately. Teens fell in love with the likes of John B., JJ, and Sarah Cameron while on the edges of their seats waiting for the next jump scare or plot advancement. The series takes place in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but was actually filmed in a geographically similar area in South Carolina. Lead actors Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline play the tough John B. Routledge and the spoiled Sarah Cameron.
Following the disappearance of his father in the past year, John B. refuses to accept that his father is dead and sets out on a mission to complete what his dad started—searching for a shipwreck called The Royal Merchant, which contains an enormous sum of money in gold. John B. and his best friends Pope, Kiara, and JJ (the less fortunate, working-class “Pogues”) embark on this journey that they soon discover is more dangerous than they think—mainly because they’re not the only ones searching for the gold. It’s filled to the brim with murder, action, jump scares, and its fair share of bloody noses. By the end of the season, fans were shifting their crushes from John B. to the brave JJ and growing their intense dislike for “Kooks” Rafe, Ward, and Topper.
If you were a loyal binge-watcher, either finishing the series two days after its release or jumping onto the bandwagon a little late like me, you have probably been eagerly anticipating the release of the second season. News that more episodes were coming spread like wildfire, but the question has now become, when? When can we expect to see what goes down in the Bahamas? Or what happens between Pope and Kie? And the unfortunate answer is that we don’t know yet. The announcement of the second season came in late July, but we haven’t heard anything since. Given that the first season was released in April of last year, does that mean we can expect another season exactly one year later? Maybe, but it’s doubtful given how much revenue the first season garnered. Producers may want to announce the release date a while before in order to attract maximum interest and anticipation. However, it’s likely we should be able to expect these precious next episodes at least sometime before the conclusion of 2021. One thing’s for sure—we will be here for it! Woogity woogity. We can’t wait to get back to “paradise on earth.”
