The various Saint Francis boys’ varsity baseball players are in the locker room preparing for their upcoming game with their routines. However, the energy in the locker room is different from last season, as it is more focused and united.
After finishing last season with 22 wins and 11 losses, the team has started this one with a strong 16-win record as they approach the halfway point of the season. The team’s improvement correlates with changes in team culture, mindset, and preparation. With these modifications, the team is playing better than ever and is looking to finish out this already great season with a section title.
The team’s impressive improvement is clear in the way the players act during games: players have better confidence, energy, and chemistry. Instead of relying on individual talent, the team is more focused on playing together. That difference has helped them win games and be more consistent.
Beau Cassel (’29) said that one of the biggest differences this season is the team culture. “ We connected more as a brotherhood, and I feel like compared to last year we’ve been very strong defensively,” Cassel said. This connection allows for better communication and more confidence during games. Joey Revels (’27) also shared that the constant growth of the team’s players has allowed them to develop more chemistry as a group. “It’s really a player-centered program, and it’s a lot of team bonding and it’s all about player development and team spirit,” Revels said.
The focus on individual development has helped players improve while still helping the team find success. Instead of being focused solely on winning, the team has concentrated on growth which, in turn, has led to good results. This mindset allows players to focus on getting better instead of worrying about the score of a game.
Preparation is also an important role in the team’s success. The players have various routines that help them stay focused, such as pre-game rituals that build energy and boost team morale. “We usually have a team meal before games. Usually I kind of just chill in the locker room, it’s very energetic and very calming,” Cassel said.
These routines help keep the players relaxed. The team meal especially helps with relationships and unity among players. It gives players time to connect before games and build a bond that will carry onto the field. Revels also revealed a similar routine to prepare for game day. “I would probably eat a good meal, get some good sleep, and listen to music in the locker room.”
Last season’s 22-11 record shows that the team was successful, but this season’s record reveals consistency and improvement. By focusing on the connection between players, player development, and pre-game preparation, this team has found the key to success.
