Yogurt is a great snack with a long list of benefits and plentiful nutrients. Known for its live cultures, high protein, and large amount of calcium, it’s popular as a versatile and convenient option for incorporating healthy food into a busy lifestyle. Many brands exist to serve the demand for yogurt, but can vegans find an option that suits their specific needs? Can vegan alternatives provide them with a similar taste and nutritional value as regular yogurt?
To gain insight into this question, we set out to Target to find as many dairy-free yogurts as possible. The selection of yogurt was vast, offering a number of different brands, but we were surprised at how hard it was to find vegan options. When we were able to find them, there were only a limited number of flavors available. We left Target with a newfound respect for vegans and their perseverance to stay committed to their dietary guidelines. Having procured our yogurt, we ended up with a total of five brands: Siggi’s, Cocojune, Silk, So Delicious, and Oui (by Yoplait). We decided to put them to the test and rate them out of ten while also providing descriptions and our personal opinions.
Siggi’s ($1.89): Mixed Berry
Siggi’s vegan yogurt is a plant-based coconut blend. As a result, we noticed a coconut aftertaste. The overall taste had strong sour notes with a light berry taste: for people familiar with the distinct artificial berry taste, they might be put off by this. We were pleasantly surprised by its ability to mimic the traditional dairy yogurt tang. As for the texture, it was smooth and thick. Nutritionally, it packs an impressive ten grams of protein, but it also contains eight grams of added sugars, coming in at 180 calories. We gave it individual scores of 6/10 and 7/10, averaging out to 6.5/10.
Silk ($1.52): Vanilla
Silk is a unique competitor, as its dairy-free yogurt is made using almond milk rather than coconut milk. We noticed that it had a nutty taste with a great vanilla flavor, true to the flavor we picked. Despite the 15 grams of added sugar, we didn’t find it overwhelmingly sweet. There was no distinct yogurt tang, but we enjoyed its smooth texture. It has five grams of protein and 190 calories. Overall, it received a 6.5/10 average score, with individual scores of 7/10 and 6/10.
So Delicious ($1.99): Strawberry Banana
So Delicious is another coconut-based alternative. With its translucent appearance and jiggly texture, we weren’t exactly the most eager to try it. Upon first glance, it reminded us of Gogurt, albeit not as appetizing. The strawberry banana flavor felt very artificial, similar to candy or liquid children’s medicine, and it didn’t have the distinctive yogurt tang we expected. With a total of 17 grams of sugar (16 grams added) and 130 calories, we weren’t exactly impressed, especially considering the fact that it had less than one gram of protein. We individually rated it 4/10 and 1/10, averaging to 2.5/10.
Oui ($1.69): Mango
Yet another coconut-based contender, Oui stood out with its real mango chunks and glass jar packaging. Out of all the yogurts we tried, the taste of this one was the richest and most decadent, which reminded us more of a dessert than traditional yogurt. Adding onto this, it also lacked the yogurt tang—but made up for it since the coconut notes complimented the mango. Its dietary information includes 13 grams of sugar (11 grams added), 150 calories, and one gram of protein. We gave it 7/10 and 6/10, for an average of 6.5/10.
Cocojune ($2.29): Vanilla Chamomile
Cocojune, which is a coconut-based yogurt, has gone viral on social media with vegan influencers. We didn’t exactly pick up on any of the vanilla or chamomile flavors, instead getting a strong coconut taste and a sour yogurt tang. It wasn’t very sweet either. We thought this was surprising, given we could see visible vanilla flecks within the yogurt. Its nutritional content is 190 calories with six grams of sugar (four grams added) and two grams of protein. We scored it at 5/10 and 6/10, giving an average of 5.5/10.
After some thought and deliberation, we picked winners for four different categories. Overall, we recommend Siggi’s and Cocojune as legitimate yogurt substitutes, but see our list of winners for a more specific breakdown!
