Now that Halloween has just swept by, millions of kids in America have been trading their hard-earned candy. A topic sparking countless debates is assigning the worth of each chocolate bar in candy exchanges. To facilitate fair trading, I thought I would provide my own ranking of the top five Halloween chocolates. Additionally, each chocolate bar description includes an interesting fact that further elevates the status of these spooky staples.
1. Twix: the undisputed champion
The first and undisputed best chocolate bars are the incredibly tasty Twix bars. With the combination of a crispy cookie base and golden caramel, followed by sweet milk chocolate, one can enjoy each delectable element on its own and then altogether in one satisfying crunch. Twix easily dominates the competition, as it is impossible to eat just one. For what it’s worth, the Twix bars labeled “Left” definitely have more caramel than the bars labeled “Right,” or at least that’s what you can tell your sibling (wink wink).
2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: sweet and salty
Next is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Sorry to those with peanut allergies—you’re missing out. These chocolate cups have the perfect combination of sweet and salty. Coated in crunchy chocolate with a creamy peanut butter center, Reese’s are easily in second place. Bonus points since Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the only chocolate candy bars on this list celebrated with a national holiday. In 2010, a petitioner gathered the required 40,000 signatures for the Hershey’s Company to declare May 18 as “I love Reese’s Day.”
3. Snickers: the perfect balance
Snickers consist of multiple layers of caramel, crunchy peanuts, and nougat, covered in a light coat of milk chocolate. They’re crunchy, soft, and sweet, making this candy bar well-balanced and simply delicious. There are countless debates about Halloween being the last day of October, and a couple of years back Snickers shared their own opinion on the matter. According to a post on X in response to Halloween falling on a Thursday in 2019, they promised that if the federal government were to make Halloween the last Saturday of October they would offer “one million free Snickers to America.” Another fun fact for all the horse lovers out there: Snickers were introduced by Mars, Incorporated in 1930, named after the founder’s favorite horse.
4. Hershey’s Bars: the classic that started it all
Hershey’s has been the classic candy for generations because of their purity and simplicity. In recent years, Hershey’s introduced a variety of new flavors: cookies’n’creme, almonds, and a number of other seasonal flavors. No matter what, Hershey’s always ranks in the top because of their original, rich chocolate flavor. This high quality shouldn’t come as a surprise given Milton Hershey, the real life Willy Wonka, spent three years perfecting the Hershey Process. They’ve literally got it down to a science. If you’re a true die-hard fan of Hershey’s, be sure to take a trip to the historic town of Hershey, Pennsylvania (a.k.a “the sweetest place on earth”).
5. 3 Musketeers: the airy bite
3 Musketeers have earned their spot in the top five because of their fluffy and creamy nougat center covered in smooth chocolate. Every time I bite into one, it feels light and airy. They are not as flashy as the others, but they would be a shame not to mention given the way they melt in my mouth. While they certainly make it onto the list, their lower ranking is due to the fact that contemporary society is deprived of the earlier flavors of 3 Muskeeters, which included strawberry and vanilla as well as chocolate, hence the name. Unfortunately, it was due to World War II sugar rationing that the other two flavors were discontinued following 1945.
