A new opportunity to impact the Saint Francis community is emerging, and the group behind it has big plans to bring forth change. This new group’s name has yet to be decided, but through the coordination of the students, the name will represent the vision of the students in this organization. Led by Saint Francis Social Studies teacher and Activities Assistant Director Mr. Zachary Herhold, the group’s mission is to contribute positively to the campus environment, culture, and community. A few of the activities it will engage in are discussing campus issues, seeking solutions, and pursuing related projects. The organization is in need of student leaders to empower and positively contribute to Saint Francis.
Numerous factors led to the group’s formation. The idea for such a group was considered and discussed with Activities Director Mr. Todd Meulman and the principal, Mrs. Katie Teekell. However, it was students who also encouraged the idea. Mr. Herhold stated that he was particularly inspired by past activities where students were able to engage in serious debates about the school; he now wants to establish a permanent base for similar conversations. “We’re trying to create a group that will allow students to be considerate about their community at large and make decisions that are best for them,” he commented.
Mr. Herhold mentioned some topics he thought were relevant for conversation, such as changes in the school curriculum. “We had some students that expressed concern about the curriculum being taught in our English and history classes,” Mr. Herhold said. “One change our school made was an anti-bias curriculum we’ve adopted, and I imagine that some students still want to have that conversation.”
Mr. Herhold also addressed how his goal for the group is to empower the students and give them liberty in the management of club affairs. When asked what the requirements are for this organization, Herhold said he is seeking passionate student leaders, stating “I would like students that really care about their school, that are willing to be involved in difficult decisions about our community, and then want to positively contribute.”
Mr. Herhold hopes that this group will eventually work together with other clubs already working towards similar goals to spur greater improvements. His vision of this group involves the club prioritizing topics and starting projects to contribute to the St. Francis community.
This new organization is open to all Saint Francis students, but interested students must submit a teacher recommendation. Freshman recommendation acceptance will be more lenient. The first meeting will be held virtually on Oct. 16 from 1:30 to 2:30. Please contact Mr. Herhold at zacharyherhold@sfhs.com for more information.
